Introduction

Online Novels contains the titles of more than 500 online books written by both published and unpublished authors who have made their work freely available on the internet. The novels listed here are organized by category, with brief descriptions taken from the websites on which they can be found.

Kindle for PC
November 11, 2009. As you may be aware, for some time free books have been available from Amazon for downloading to their electronic reader. Until now, the 6 billion or so people who don't own a Kindle were out of luck, but Amazon recently introduced "Kindle for PC," software which allows the user to download these same books to his computer (Windows 7, Vista and XP - the Mac version is coming soon and in the meantime you can download the free Kindle app from iTunes store and read books using your iPhone or iPod Touch). To install the reader, click on the download button here and when prompted, click Save file. The setup file will then download. When download is complete, double click KindleForPC-installer.exe to run the install. To finish the process, register your email address and password with Amazon. On Amazon's "Manage Your Kindle" page, the country must be set to "United States" in order to access most of the free content. (BTW - I don't think they verify the location, but don't quote me). In the Launch Application box, select Amazon Kindle for PC Application. These books will be identified in the listings as "Kindle for PC - Limited Time."
These books are free at the time I list them, but they change status fast, often in a matter of days, so if you see something that interests you, grab it now!

Thank you for listing my book Woman, Gentle Woman on this site. I have a longer "blurb" for the book as well as a cover, and I can send it to you if like.

What a great website!

Sincerely,
Victoria Davisson

Many thanks for the compliment - I am very happy to make the blurb change for Woman, Gentle Woman as well as to include the novel cover. I shall also list the book in the Romance category, in addition to Western.

Good morning, Susan! Thank you for listing THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE. I hope it proves as popular as MOONLIGHT ON SNOW.

I must again compliment you on your wonderful site. There are others out there who do the same, but they're often badly organized, contain lots of broken links, and are difficult to navigate.

Your site is focused, clean, and easy to explore. In fact, every time I come here, I spend way too much time exploring. *g*

Best wishes!

Dear webmaster,
I have tried to click on the submissions and broken link but receive a page not found. Please let know how to suggest a new title.
Many thanks and kind regards,

Well that's ironic - the broken link page has a broken link! My error and thank you for letting me know. I've fixed the link and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks so much, Susan, for featuring two of my freebies. I've had a leap in reader interest in my work ever since you posted them here. Kudos to you for starting and maintaining such a great website.

And thank YOU, Suprina, for offering these books free - as you can imagine, the romance category is the most popular one I feature, and Bound by Love and My Lover, My Friend always place high in reader interest. Needless to say, if you decide to offer another freebie, I'll be delighted to list it!

Hi! Great idea for a site. I saw you stopped by my blog "5 Pages," so I hope you'll list "Up So Floating Many Bells Down" (http://www.nonsportsman.com) here, as well as my sci-fi-venture-fantasy-horror-serial, "Lesbian Zombies Are Taking Over The World!" (http://lesbianzombies.blogspot.com)

Webmaster said...

Hi Briane - thank you for getting in touch with me; yes, I visited your site back on April 3, liked what I saw, and added your stories to my serials database. When I started Online Novels, I considered
listing ongoing serials along with completed novels, but so many that I looked at hadn't been updated in years. It doesn't seem fair to leave readers hanging, so I decided against it. That being said,
there are a few incomplete serials on the blog: (1) a few have just slipped by me and I'm hoping for the best; (2) some others are by writers with whom I've had a long enough relationship to be sure they'll finish their books; (3) because I'm a wuss and, when begged, didn't have the heart to say 'no'.

As I indicated above, I have a database of incomplete serials whose progress I follow regularly, and
when I see they're finished, I write the authors to ask for permission to list their book. If I don't get to you first, please send me a message when yours are complete and I'll be happy to include them.

Dear Ms Crealock - thanks for your comment on http://www.barefootclients.co.za/home/read-my-novel-for-free/ about my novel Belthar's Garden. Yes, please put it onto your excellent blog. Will I be able to get stats on downloads?

Thanks and keep up the good work

When you have a moment, could you have a look at

We have one novel, Cold Hillside, and a collection of short stories. More to come, all free to download.

Many thanks

Susan,
Thanks for creating such a useful and well organized catalog of e-reads. I've visited countless others like it, but few come close and none match yours for quality, simplicity, and ease of use. My only request/suggestion is that you list somewhere what books have been added each day/week. This would save me from obsessively scrolling through all the pages of my favorite genres every few days to see if anything has been added! It might also be nice to have ratings for the books (yours or the public's).
Thanks again for your website,
Sarah

Webmaster said...

Hi Sarah - thank you for the compliment and the suggestion, which is an excellent one. At the moment I'm traveling and don't have consistent internet access, but I'll try to implement a "new in the last week" list, or similar, as soon as possible.

I welcome comments and suggestions - if any of you readers out there would like to rate a book, I'll be glad to publish your review.

Renee' said...

Great, Thanks :)

Webmaster said...

Thanks Renee' - I appreciate your comment. BTW, a few days ago I implemented Sarah's suggestion and started a "Recent Additions" post, listing the books added in the last ten days.

Hi Renee' - yes, it's certainly ok to mention my blog on yours, and thank you.

Susan, I just wanted to say that the "Recent Additions" post is great and very helpful - thanks for taking that extra time! :)

Whoops - these got out of order. In response to "Anonymous" who commented on the "Recent Additions," I'd been meaning to do this for a while, just needed a push!

Abhishek said...

can you please put The Alchemist, Atlas shrugged and Snapshots from hell (Life in a business school) by Paulo coelho,Ayn Rand respectively... (the 3rd author I don't know)

Webmaster said...

Thank you for your comment, Abhishek. I'm afraid I can't add these books, much as I'd like to, because they are either (1) still under copyright or (2) not released for free distribution. Paulo Coelho has made The Way of the Bow available as well as The Zahir, which is offered by the publisher for a limited time. Both are on this blog in the General category. Take a look at Coelho's web site, http://paulocoelhoblog.com/internet-books/, for other possibilities, though I very much doubt you'll find The Alchemist.

To the best of my knowledge, Rand's and Robinson's books are not legally available for reading free on the internet.

Hi Susan, thanks for contacting me on No Man an Island and showing interest. If you would like to include it (www.nomananisland.wordpress.com) that would be great.

I have another work, http://gavinwilliams.digitalnovelists.com/diggory that's called The Surprising Life and Death of Diggory Franklin. It's a soft sci-fi story with interesting twists. It's listed on the Web Fiction Guide, http://webfictionguide.com/listings/the-surprising-life-and-death-of-diggory-franklin/ which has some summary details.

No Man an Island has a good summary there too, http://webfictionguide.com/listings/no-man-an-island/

Many thanks, Gavin. I'll add both books to the blog tomorrow morning.

Hi. When I download Sara Reinke's novels, the files come up corrupted and will not open. Is anyone else having this problem?

Thank you for helping me.

lgt

Webmaster said...

Hi Löki - thank you for letting me know about the problem. Just a few minutes ago I successfully downloaded Highwayman Lover (307 pages), Heart's Ransom (262 pages) and Eye of the Storm (203 pages). Not the speediest downloads I've ever seen, but not too bad. The files were complete and uncorrupted. Were you trying to download one of these? If not, please let me know which is the offender. Maybe the problem was temporary.

Clicking on your name, I see you're a Peace Corps volunteer in Azerbaijan - wow! Good for you. Probably not too many Barnes & Nobles in your neck of the woods, so I hope this issue gets resolved.

Alien Deception by Tony Ruggiero does not appear to be a complete book. The end of the story seems to be missing. How will I ever find out how things ended?

Webmaster said...

Good question, Anonymous. From the publisher's point of view the answer is "buy the book." Just kidding - of course this isn't acceptable. Alien Deception is published by Dragon Moon Press and I've never known them to stoop to this ploy.

I downloaded the book myself; it ends on page 365 and the final sentence is "wished he had never had the thought." Went to Amazon where, fortunately, the book is listed with the "Look inside" feature; entered the phrase and it came up on the last page of the book, so I'd say the DMP version is complete. One problem with DMP is that they have graphics on every page, so their books (excellent, by the way) download v-e-r-y slowly. Maybe your internet connection died waiting for the download to complete. Please let me know if you continue to have problems.

Susan!

Thank you so much for your help! All it took was a simple Google search to figure out my problem!

And thank you for this wonderful site! I am having a great time downloading young adult books for my English language practice clubs here in Azerbaijan! It is incredibly difficult to find easy to read books for the youth to practice their language. Your site provides a great (free) resource for a PCV!

Yaxshi olun! (Be safe!)

Webmaster said...

Löki, I'm glad you solved the problem and are now able to download. Knowing you're using these books to teach English really makes my day! The power of the internet never ceases to amaze me.

Tomorrow I'll be adding another Young Adult/Western novel you might find useful - Battle at Bighorn by J.E. Richman.

Yaxshi olun to you, too!

What a wonderful idea for a web site, Susan. Nice to know there are still some quality destinations on the web. Keep up the fabulous work. :)

It would be helpful if the “limited time” flag was included when a book first is listed in the “recent additions” section. That way, when someone scans the recent additions area, the warning/notice immediately is apparent - that there may be some need for a prompt decision as to whether to download the book

Webmaster said...

Thank you, Anonymous, for the excellent suggestion. I'll begin today with the new listings and try to get caught up on the others. Now and for the next 5 weeks I'm away from home and must rely on the public library and Starbucks for my internet access, so updating opportunities aren't what they used to be.

What a useful and helpful source for writers. I'll add this site to my new writing blog as a 'Resource for writers.'

You don't seem to have any non-fiction, or I'd ask to have my book listed here too.

Anne

Webmaster said...

Thanks for your kind words, Anne. No non-fiction, I'm afraid. If I added another category, I'd have to devote 30 hours a day to this project instead of just 24!

Thanks so much for including "Sentence of Marriage"! I'm delighted to see that it was September's most popular Historical Novel.

Ms. Crealock,

What a truly awesome service you provide here. The time it must take is mind-blowing. A great service to all would-be writers. Thanks for reaching out and adding my story to your website.

Webmaster said...

Thank you - it's comments like yours that make maintaining the blog worthwhile. You're right about the time it takes - when I read your remark to my husband, he burst out laughing! The Final Dragonkeeper is a charming story, one that will appeal to adults as well as to children, and I wish you every success.

hey, i'm mirey, and i have a question. at the begining of 2009 there was a book posted on the blog called "fine art" and i loved it. but i don't remember who wrote it and i want to know more about the author and the book. could someone tell me who was the author? plsssss thanks

Webmaster said...

Hi Mirey - I looked in my data base of deleted books and found Fine Art, by Maura Murphy; I removed this book from the blog, along with three others by the same author, on May 31 at her request. Ms. Murphy said she'd heard of plagiarism cases involving the theft of material available on the internet and was removing all her novels from her site in order to protect herself. It's a pity, because her books were extremely popular. The URL I had for her is no longer active. I did a quick Google search and didn't find much; maybe another reader can give you more current information.

Anonymous said...

Fine Art is not published anywhere, but Maura did mention (on facebook) that she would like get get it published. One of her books Inn Too Deep is availiable at lulu.com and that would probably be where she would post them.

If you want to contact her I suggest trying to search for her at facebook and send her a message (her profile picture is of trees)
